"Okay, I'm going to take Fluffy in the back for their blood draw and treatments"
As pet owners, it’s natural to feel the need to be by your furry friend’s side, especially when they’re not feeling well. After all, we know how comforting it can be to have the support of loved ones during times of stress. But when it comes to some pets—especially in a veterinary setting—the situation can be quite different. You may have noticed that when your pet is sick or anxious, they seem to do better without your immediate presence. But why is that?

It's Where the Equipment and Supplies Live
“The back” refers to the treatment area of the clinic. This is where all our tools and supplies live! There are regulations most clinics have to follow, so keeping supplies in the room is not always an option. Also, some equipment is not easily moved into the rooms.
Avoids Cramped Exam Rooms and Gives your Pet Space
Some exam rooms are small and cramped, especially when working with anxious animals or large dogs. Moving to the treatment area gives the technician team more room to work, while also making sure your pet has the room to be comfortable to feel less "boxed" in.
Eliminates Protective Instincts
Some animals, especially dogs, can do better away from their owners. Most of the time it boils down to them trying to protect you in some way. It isn't personal, just the way some dogs work.

At the end of the day, our team is here to work with you and your pet to ensure you are both comfortable with the diagnostics and treatments being performed. If you and your pet are more comfortable having procedures done together in the examination room we will do our best to accommodate your pet's needs.
And if your pet has to "go to the back"- rest assured, we are giving all the attention and love we can fit in in the time we have, puppy and kitten snuggles, laying down with a dog to make sure they are comfortable and feel safe in our environment.

Note from the Author - Hey there, I’m Steph! My personal dog (Mike Wazowski) does a lot better when he is away from me for his treatments! He and I prefer a less stressful visit. He is great with me and when I am the one doing the procedures, but if someone else has to do the procedures he chooses not to participate. However, when he is taken away from me into the treatment area, he will let the team do what they need!
